August Update from Parents Step Up President

Hello Everyone,
With the new school year just around the corner; Parents Step Up wants to remind you that the time for a Parent Movement and change is now!
What does this mean? Well, it is simple really, it means that it is time for all parents and caregivers to step up and play an active role in their children’s lives everyday!

Parents Step Up believes that the changes we need; to make our children safer and the world around us better, starts at home. We refuse to wait; until the next tragedy that could have ultimately been avoided or the next school shooting from someone with all the red flags visibly there, to step up and help ensure we are doing everything we can to keep all children safe while teaching and encouraging them to be the best people they can be. We must be proactive and not just reactive. We need our children, and really all children, to visibly see we are there for them, and they are not in this alone. We need to know who our children are spending their time with; know their friends, know their teachers and know what they are doing. We need to talk to our children everyday; ask how their day was, what did they learn, what was the best and the worst part of their day, and listen to hear them not to just respond. If our children are struggling in school we need to seek answers to help them, and teach them how to be active advocates for themselves.

Every child deserves to have a safe and trusted adult to turn to and talk to about problems and worries. Ideally this trusted adult would be their parent/caregiver; but the reality is that not all children have this at home. This is where the “it takes a village” mentality comes into play. If your child has a friend and the friend does not have a trusted, non judgemental, caring adult to talk to; then step up. Be that trusted, non judgemental and caring adult. Help find and show the children in our lives resources to help. If we all come together we can make school a better experience and a safer place for our children.

If you have questions then seek the answers, ask the schools, ask the professionals, or go to Parents Step Up website for resources. Also, feel free to email Parents Step Up and we will gladly help find the answers; because if it is a question you have or your child has, I can guarantee, you are not the only one with that question, and the more resources and information we can share within our “village” the easier it is for all of us.

Remember that the beginning of a new school year can be stressful, exciting and filled with all kinds of emotions for our children, as they enter into a new year filled with new adventures and unknowns. Don’t discredit their feelings; instead make home a safe place to discuss and work through how to handle their feelings. We all need support at times, parents/caregivers and our children, and we all can help be the support others need. Let’s strive to make this year the year of change within ourselves to better our families, our communities, our nation, our “village”. Let’s make this year a fun and safe experience for our children. Let’s make this year the year of the Parent Movement!

We hope everyone has a wonderful beginning of the school year, and we encourage everyone to step up, take action, be involved and reach out to us if you need help or have ideas. And lastly; but definitely in no means least, THANK YOU to all of those who have stepped up and will step up. You are the true Superheroes in our “village”; even when it may not seem like it.

Have an amazing 2018-2019 school year!!!!!
